Degage Ministries is a community center that serves homeless and low-income individuals.
The mission of Dégagé Ministries is "to reflect the love of Christ to all who come through our doors by building relationships and offering programs that foster dignity and respect."
Dégagé Ministries is an ecumenical Christian organization that was founded in 1967 and has faithfully served the Heartside Neighborhood of Grand Rapids for over 45 years. Beginning as a coffeehouse, the organization has grown dramatically and now serves between 400-500 individuals daily, the majority of whom are homeless and low-income.
While Dégagé offers numerous programs to meet immediate and long term-needs, one of our ultimate goals is to assure that every man and woman we serve knows that they are not alone as they journey through life's obstacles. Thus, we walk alongside individuals to provide support while at the same time holding them accountable for their future. Our programs have been intentionally created out of a direct response to needs in the community. They are listed below. Please see our website at www.degageministries.org for more details.
Dining Room: The Dining Room serves as a place of relationship building and safety from the streets. Meals are offered at a low-cost to promote dignity and responsibility.
The Open Door Women's Center: Women come as an alternative to sleeping outdoors, to escape domestic violence, or to leave precarious housing situations. We work one-on-one with each woman to address barriers to permanent housing. The center averages 35-40 women per evening.
Resource Office: Patrons receive assistance with immediate and long-term needs
such as securing funding for medical care, receiving referrals for rehabilitation, or obtaining employment. Our staff walks alongside patrons through the steps of attaining and maintaining permanent housing.
Hygiene Facilities and Basic Needs: Dégagé offers private showers, restrooms, a laundromat, a hair salon, personal care products, lockers, support groups, a mail/message center and pro-bono legal services.
ID Office: Without proper identification, an individual is unable to cash a check, receive a Social Security card or open a bank account. As a result, many individuals are being turned away from possible employment opportunities and housing; ultimately inhibiting the individual's self-sufficiency. Dégagé has helped over 4,000 individuals obtain identification.
Food Pantry: Weekly, approximately 70 households are served through Dégagé's consumer choice food pantry.
Dégagé Dollars: Patrons complete over 40 routine custodial jobs throughout the facility each day in exchange for bus tickets or vouchers towards Dégagé's programs.
Recreation: To escape the monotony of everyday life on the street, holiday parties, monthly birthday parties and special trips to the beach, a musical performance or a sporting event are offered.
Patron Partnerships: Weekly, Dégagé brings 5 patrons to volunteer at Blandford Nature Center. Bi-weekly, a group of women from our Open Door Women's Center volunteer at a local elementary school. Patrons who have attended orientation can also help serve food in our kitchen.
