counseling for women by a female psychologist, Stephane Silverman MA individual and group therapy
I have been a psychologist since 2001 after graduating with a Master of Arts degree in Clinical Psychology from Wheaton College. I enjoy working with children and teens and their families and have particular expertise in working with women–from preteens to older adults.
Prior to joining HFPS, I provided outpatient therapy at the Therapy Center at BRAINS (Behavior Resources and Institute for Neurological Services) and at the Holland and Northwest Pine Rest Clinics. In these outpatient settings I worked with a wide range of issues including anxiety, depression and adjustment to major life transitions. I also provided inpatient and outpatient services at Wedgewood in Grand Rapids and at Lydia Home in Chicago where I worked with children and adolescents who have significant emotional, behavioral and substance abuse disorders.
I’ve received training in treatment approaches for children with Attachment Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, substance use disorders as well as recovery from physical and sexual abuse. I’ve also trained in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy. In my outpatient settings, I received training in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy and Exposure Response Prevention for treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. My most extensive post graduate training has been in Dialectical Behavior Therapy an empirically validated treatment for adults who may be experiencing various psychological problems from previous trauma. D,B,T, combines Cognitive-Behavioral Techniques for emotion regulation with concepts of mindful awareness, distress tolerance and acceptance, derived from Buddhist principles.
While I work with people experiencing a wide range of issues, I have expertise in and enjoy working with:
Preteens and teens navigating the challenging worlds of middle and high school
College-aged women developing their identities and adjusting to the adult world
Parents of young children, pre-teens and teens
Women at mid-life who desire to find meaning and purpose
Women at any age experiencing relationship problems
Families going through divorce and the blending of new families
Women experiencing various losses, including infertility, miscarriage and the loss of significant people in their lives
Women with eating disorders
I strive to provide a welcoming and emotionally safe space in which clients can explore the issues they are facing. I thoroughly enjoy helping people find hope when there seems to be none and to discover their passions and strengths.
